Imust confess to having a tear in my eye as I bid farewell to my trusty old friend, r-Evolve 2008. I think of all the sites I’ve designed and built, conceptually it was my favorite. Cobbled together spontaneously over a few days, the back end work leaves a lot to be desired. However, once it was up and out there, I never had the heart to tamper with it too much. Response to this opus of Dadaist chicanery was pretty much overwhelming: viewers either loved it or hated it, but no-one ignored it. Like Howard Stern back in the day, supporters would engage for some minutes (a long time in my world) and dissenters, as far as I can glean, considerably more. The volume of positive mail I received in the first few months more than justified my belief that it shouldn’t be messed with and so it stayed; ragged around the edges and provocative.

It was liked so much, in fact, that a friend who had been Creative Director at an agency I had worked for asked if he could use the design for his personal website. I promptly agreed and it still resides on his domain today, albeit in a somewhat truncated form. Today, I am still somewhat perplexed by its popularity. Potentially, it has something to do with the cozy juxtaposition of days-gone-by images with digital fragments and a certain quaint nostalgia that evokes. Every dog, though has it’s day, so they say, and this one has had over 700. I have decided to retire 2008 and look forward with bright enthusiasm to the next time I can shed a tear over several million pixels spread across a screen. It is time to say goodbye, Dear Friend. You were loyal, you served me well and I will miss you more than you can possibly know.
